Peter Langley is a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England & Wales, a Patent Attorney and a Trade Mark Attorney. He is the founder of Origin and has been voted one of the top 40 technology lawyers in the UK.

Peter advises many leading European technology companies, including Symbian, TomTom and ARM, as well as many younger companies like Spinvox and Cognima. He also has extensive experience advising financial institutions on intellectual property matters and has advised leading North American financial institutions on patenting finance related innovations.

Peter has extensive experience in protecting computer related technology. He is also Visiting Professorial Fellow in Law at the Centre for Digital Music, Queen Mary College, London University.

Colm MacKernan is admitted to practice law in three countries and several jurisdictions as:
a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England & Wales;
a Solicitor in the Republic of Ireland;
a Member of both the New York and District of Columbia (Washington DC) Bars, as well as various US Federal Courts including the Federal District Court for the District of Columbia, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the United States Supreme Court; and
a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

Colm holds an undergraduate degree in Physics from the University of Dublin, Trinity College, and a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from Georgetown University in Washington, DC. After serving as a stagiaire in the European Commission’s Competition Directorate (DG IV), he practiced law in a US-based international boutique specialising in intellectual property litigation, international trade and antitrust law for six years, spent three years in Tokyo at a leading Japanese international law and intellectual property firm and was general counsel (GC) to two major companies, Psion PLC and ARM Holdings PLC.

Colm represents high technology companies (including the companies where he served as GC) based in Asia, the United States and Europe on complex international matters including transactions and litigation. He has authored and co-authored numerous articles, books and papers on issues relating to international commercial law, intellectual property and competition, and antitrust law, including:

A Practical Guide to Intellectual Property in Mergers & Acquisitions (Sweet & Maxwell 2006);

As well as a Director (Principal) of Origin, he is Of Counsel to the Tokyo law firm Nagashima & Hashimoto, and lives, mostly, in London and Washington, DC.

Robert Carolina is a Solicitor of the Supreme Court England & Wales, and a member of both the American and Illinois Bar Associations. In additional to an undergraduate degree from the University of Dayton, he holds degrees from Georgetown University (Juris Doctor) and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LL.M in International Business Law). Following a period in-house with an Internet software development company, he moved to London in 1992 and subsequently worked for two of the world’s largest law firms.

Robert has represented numerous customer and supplier companies in technology procurement and outsourcing contract negotiations. He also advises on legal aspects of complex e-commerce systems. Recognised as a leading UK expert on IT law and e-commerce law, he regularly presents courses and workshops on legal aspects of technology procurement and e-commerce.

Robert Pocknell is a Solicitor of the Supreme Court England & Wales. Robert spent more than 10 years in private practice with a music and entertainment law firm in London; after a brief period in his own practice, he became General Counsel for Sendo, a mobile phone manufacturer. Following the acquisition of Sendo by Motorola, Robert worked for TomTom, a manufacturer of personal navigation devices, and managed the successful conclusion of the patent litigation commenced by Garmin. Robert is a consultant solicitor with Origin and specialises in advice on patent licensing, particularly in the field of telecommunications standards, and on devising IP strategies and managing complex cross-jurisdictional litigation.

Dr David Bottomley is our Senior Physicist. He has a PhD in physics from the University of Toronto, Canada, an MBA from the University of Oxford, and has been accredited as a Chartered Physicist (CPhys) by the Institute of Physics, UK.

David spent seven years in Japan working in applied physics research in the areas of semiconductor fabrication and optics. This included three years at NTT Basic Research Laboratories, two years at Tohoku University, and two years at the Electrotechnical Laboratory (now part of the Advanced Industrial Science and Technology Laboratories). He presented in Japanese at Japanese Society of Applied Physics meetings on seven occasions. He has co-authored over 40 refereed publications in applied physics research, and is the inventor of two patent filings.
